retainers at team orthodontics

Now you have a healthy bite and the fantastic smile that you’ve always wanted. Your teeth have come a long way from where we started and we’d like to keep them that way.

As you exit the “active” phase of your orthodontic treatment you enter into the retention phase.

In the retention phase of your orthodontic treatment, retainers are used to hold teeth in the correct position as your bones and gums adapt to the changes that have taken place. If your retainers are not worn as instructed by the staff at Team Orthodontics, your teeth can move back towards their old positions.

We want to ensure that you keep your healthy, perfect smile for as long as possible. Wearing your retainer is a critical phase of your orthodontic treatment!

We invite you to begin your orthodontic treatment with a free consultation today!

Additional Information About Retainers

Without retainers, your teeth would eventually shift back to their original position after you’ve completed your orthodontic treatment.

Removable retainers can be an option to help keep your teeth in their current, improved position with minimal inclusion for the rest of your life. Here are some tips for wearing your removable retainer:

ALWAYS handle your retainers with care.

For the first two months in your retention phase, you should be wearing your retainers at all times (except at mealtime or instructed otherwise).

After the initial two months, you should always be wearing your retainers at night while you sleep.

Keep your retainers clean. Do not immerse them in hot water or leave them in a hot car.

DO NOT soak or clean retainers in the following materials, as it can ruin them: denture cleaner, isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, bleach, or mouthwash.

Bonded retainers are also an excellent way to help maintain the positions of your teeth. Just like removable retainers, if they are not cared for properly it can bring forth addition problems.

Here are some basic tips for maintaining your bonded retainers and keeping your teeth in excellent condition:

Don’t bite down into anything hard.

Don’t chew on pens, pencils, water bottle caps, or ice cubes.

Keep your retainer clean.

Proper use of floss is imperative to keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Retainer Emergencies

If you notice any issues with your teeth positioning, fit, or if you’ve lost your retainer, contact Team Orthodontics immediately. If you’re in a pinch and can’t get in to see us, a boil-and-bite mouthguard from any sporting goods store can be used as a temporary retainer until you can get in to see us.
