Corrective jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, helps to correct these problems.
When paired with orthodontic treatment, corrective jaw surgery will improve the quality of life for the patient as well as their overall facial appearance.
There are plenty of conditions that can be fixed with corrective jaw surgery and orthodontic treatment. Here are some of the most common:
Unbalanced facial appearance from the front or the side
Inability to make the lips meet without straining
Chronic mouth breathing
Difficulty chewing or biting food
Chronic jaw or joint pain and headache
Excessive wear of the teeth
An open bite when the mouth is closed
Receding lower jaw and chin
What Are Common Corrections That Jaw Surgery Can Fix?
Correcting an open bite
To correct an open bite, some of the bone in the upper tooth-bearing portion of the upper jaw is surgically removed. The upper jaw is then secured in position to create a happier and healthier look.
Correcting a protruding lower jaw (underbite)
To correct an underbite, the bone in the back portion of the jaw is separated from the front portion and modified so that the tooth-bearing portion of the lower jaw can be moved back and be aligned properly.
Correcting a receding lower jaw (overbite)
To correct an overbite, the bone in the lower portion of the jaw is separated from its base and surgically modified. The tooth-bearing portion of the lower jaw and a portion of the chin are repositioned forward.
