This Early Orthodontic Treatment, referred to as Phase I treatment, typically begins around the age of 7 years old and may last from 10 to 18 months, depending on the extent of care needed. The goals during this phase of treatment are very specific and can be achieved by using very simple appliances and partial braces only. Visits to the practice are usually scheduled once every 6-10 weeks, during which time comfortable adjustments are made to the appliances and treatment progress is monitored.
After the initial goals are met, the appliances and braces are removed and custom retainers provided to maintain the results and help guide into place the permanent teeth. Dr. Danyluk will continue monitoring development of the jaw, teeth and facial muscles every 3-6 months and an evaluation made once all the permanent teeth have erupted into the mouth whether further orthodontic care is needed.
Dr. Danyluk believes strongly in the guidelines set out by the American Association of Orthodontists, suggesting that children should be seen no later than seven years of age for their first orthodontic evaluation. Previously held beliefs that patients should wait to visit with the orthodontist can result in even more difficult orthodontic treatments for the patient. As with a visit to your physician, recognizing and possibly treating a problem when it is small, is much easier than leaving a problem to develop into a more complicated situation. An examination will allow Dr. Danyluk to evaluate your child’s occlusion (bite), facial growth and general amount of dental crowding. This assessment may reveal the need for early interceptive treatment, future comprehensive orthodontic care or no treatment at all!
What if my child needs a second phase treatment?
When most of the permanent teeth have developed into the child’s mouth, an evaluation can be made together with Dr. Danyluk regarding the need for any additional orthodontic care. This completing phase of treatment (Phase II) involves braces on all of the permanent teeth to ensure an optimal bite and alignment of the teeth is present. This phase of treatment typically ranges from 12 to 20 months in length.
